Supporting QoS Across the Compute Continuum: Are We There Yet?

The Compute Continuum is reshaping how applications are deployed and executed across edge, fog, and cloud resources. Critical applications, however, require Quality of Service guarantees — bounded latency, reliability, and predictability — that must be preserved despite the heterogeneity and dynamism of the underlying infrastructure. Delivering such guarantees across the continuum remains a work in progress: research has produced effective solutions for QoS-aware orchestration and energy-efficient resource management, yet current implementations still fall short of end-to-end guarantees. This keynote will review recent research on introducing QoS support at scale in the continuum. Starting from example use-cases in e-health and industrial automation, the talk will first examine the progress made and the gap that still separates it from practice. It will then discuss how emerging classes of applications, such as pervasive AI agents, are set to raise the bar even further, analyzing the challenges this poses for jointly managing computing and networking resources across the continuum.

Carlo Vallati is Associate Professor at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa. He received a Master’s Degree (magna cum laude) and a PhD in Computer Systems Engineering in 2008 and 2012, respectively, from the University of Pisa. In 2010, he visited the Computer Science department of the University of California at Davis. He is co-author of +120 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He has been involved in several research projects both supported by private industries and public institutions. He has served as a program committee member for more than 50 international conferences and workshops and as Workshop Chair for the IEEE IoT-SoS and IEEE SmartSys workshops. He served as TPC Co-Chair for IEEE SMARTCOMP 2020, IEEE WoWMoM 2025 and as General Vice-Chair for IEEE PerCom 2022. He is on the editorial board of two international journals, the “Journal of Reliable Intelligent Environments”, Springer and “Ad Hoc Network”, Elsevier, and he is an Area Editor for the journal “Computers and Electrical Engineering”, Elsevier. He is the coordinator of the Cloud Computing, Big Data and Cybersecurity Crosslab founded in the framework of the Departments of Excellence (“Dipartimenti di Eccellenza”) funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (“Ministero dell’Istruzione dell’Università e della Ricerca”).
